We've had the pleasure and privilege of having most of our rehearsals outside, in various parks around the city. Our rehearsals have consisted of using various tools, exercises and explorations for extensive character work. Within this performance, I am part of an Ancestral Chorus and have the opportunity to portray an opera singer from the 1500's. I must admit, having rehearsals outside and exploring our characters in public was a little off-putting to me at first. I am so accustomed to being in a classroom, in a studio, inside a theatre and rehearsing in the "normal" way, but this experience continues to be so liberating! What is so enjoyable about this process is that it brings me back to the foundation of why I love to be an actor. You are connecting with this character, this foreign part of yourself, and you are bringing it to life. You are creating something that an audience can feel and relate to on many levels. It's about providing that escape and creating moments where the outside world disappears, leaving only what's left happening in the moment and reveling there. Throughout this process, I've had my doubts, I've had my frustrations, and I've been embarrassed, but the rewards that I have found outweigh everything else. I think this performance has the potential for greatness and I hope to see you all there!
Life's too short to do anything other than what you love.
